Savage Arms Model 72 Serial Number Lookup
Savage/Stevens model 72 crackshot 22LR. These rifles were sold by Stevens but made by savage from 1972-1987. This single shot rifle is a more modern version of the old rolling blocks rifles of the past. Apr 27, 2011 Re: Savage model numbers Savage has basiclly divided up the types of rifles and given them their own series. 2 digit numbers are Short Actions and 3 digit numbers are long actions. 10/110 = Sporter (old designation, now 10/110 is designation for the Law Enforcement Series).
I bought one at a gun show in Wisconsin for $280.00. It is in very nice shape.
Depending on condition and which version of the model 19 NRA it is (the rifle's original turn-of-the-century military styling was remodeled/modernized in 1933 with a heavier barrel, chunkier beavertail forend target st ock, a faster, accuracy-boosting 'speedlock' firing pin and cosmetic changes), it can be worth up to $500 in today's market. In decent shape, any of them will range from $150-$400. Run a few online searches and read some of the shooters' and collectors' forums.
You'll learn some interesting things about your rifle like when it was made and where to find parts and have some fun. I should mention that obviously, the 'NRA' in the name is a reference to the National Rifle Association and that Savage intended the rifle to be a budget competition target rifle. It succeeded rather nicely.

If the bore is in good condition (and most are), with quality ammunition, these rifles are real 'tack drivers' even by today's standards. Assuming you have the skills, you can astound your shooting buddies with what an old.22 can do at a hundred yards. It goes without saying (he said), they make deadly accurate small game rifles.
Is there any information available regarding use of serial numbers to help determine year of manufacture of Savage firearms. In my case I am thinking specifically of the modern Favorite copies.meaning the Model 71, 72, 74, and the 30G models including all three calibers. And, I remember a few years ago seeing sellers at gun shows with little booklets for different gun companies that apparently had information on year of manufacture by the serial number. I have not seen anyone selling those little books. Were the books of any use?
Is that information all on the internet now? I already asked this on on Rimfire Central and did not find out much. FWIW I recently went to the Savage web site thinking maybe I could contact them about some historical specifics.like the serial number question. The company had thought ahead on this, probably because of having to field all kinds of contacts from us gun enthusiasts of all kinds. Anyway, point is, the mailing address of a Mr. Callahan was given and indicated that he had once worked for Savage and now is voluntarily answering inquiries from Savage products collectors.
So, I sat down at the computer (I think in Oct but maybe early Nov) and wrote him a nice letter of inquiry and gave him ways to easily contact me without having to write a paper letter. I gave him my email address and phone number. I have, as of this date, not heard from him. This could mean he burned out on the task or it could mean that he is more than a month behind, almost two months, on correspondence. I do not know.
I am sure I have kept the letter in my word file if you want his full name and address I could give it to you if you cannot find it on the Savage site.
