In this video, we will demonstrate a practical example of using the XTools Pro 'Go To' features. Working with different data and maps in ArcGIS sometimes we may face the need in additional information about particular locations. Such additional details can be available with online map services, as they cover the entire planet and are always accessible and regularly updated.

For example, we’ve got a few spatial datasets. We can open them in ArcMap, but we still may have no idea about the data and the place.

We can try to zoom in and out, but depending on the datasets size this may be of no use for us. We still don’t know where we are. Another way to find bearings is looking at the attributes – geographic names usually can give an idea about the place.

In our case, we have lots of attributes in the data but none of them are helpful for our need. As there is not enough information in the data, we can only refer to the external resources, for instance, to online map services in our case. XTools Pro provides an easy way to do so with the Go to features. Let’s go to Google Maps selecting the corresponding menu item.

The tool automatically opens the default browser with the Google Maps page zoomed to the current map location in ArcMap. Now we can finally see what’s the place and find bearings on the map. This is Akademgorodok, a scientific suburb of Novosibirsk, Russia and our hometown.

We can change between the Earth (satellite images) and Map (vector map) modes and also zoom and pan to take a closer look around. By the way, this is where the XTools team is located. There are other reasons for using the Go To features in XTools Pro. Let’s take another example. We’ve got a highway layer at the Hoover dam.

We add it on the map and see differences with the older highway. Let’s see what’s available with Google at this location, this time using the Google Earth application. The Google Earth application opens and zooms to the Hoover dam in Nevada according to the current location in ArcMap. Now in Google Earth we can easily see there is actually a new highway. Besides, in Google Earth we can view this particular location in 3D if we zoom close enough, including 3D models of buildings and bridge. Let’s see what online maps services and desktop applications are available with the Go To features. Here they are: — Google Maps online service — Google Earth application — Microsoft Bing Maps online service — OpenStreetMap online service — ArcGIS Explorer application — And ArcGIS Earth application The Go To features can be used for better understanding locations on the map in ArcMap and for getting more information about places from satellite images available with online services and applications.

Obviously, the required applications should be installed and Internet connection should be available for using the Go To features. XTools Pro is the #1 Productivity Suite for ArcGIS Professionals.
